This study is a classroom action research implementing language games to improve students’ speaking ability. The aims of this research are (1) to identify whether and to what extent language games can improve students’ speaking ability and (2) to describe the classroom situation when language games are used in teaching and learning process of speaking.
The research was carried out in 2009/2010 academic year in the seventh years students of SMPIT Nurul Islam Tengaran. This was conducted in two cycles: the firs cycle consists of four meetings and so was the second cycle. The procedures of the research consist of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. To collect the data some instruments were used namely: questionnaire, interview, classroom observation, test, and diary. The tests were in form of pre-test and post-test. The qualitative were analyzed by using the constant comparative method and the quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic.
The result of the research shows that (1) language games could improve students’ speaking ability in the term of raising students’ achieving in the case of (a) fluency, (b) grammar, (c) vocabulary, (d) content, (e) pronunciation. (2) language games can improve class situation, in term of the students were (a) being active during the speaking class especially in responding teacher’s question, (b) being more attentive to the speaking class (c) being braver to speak during the speaking class, (d) being active both individual and partner group activities, and (e) the more interest to the speaking class.
Based on the result of the research, it is suggested that teachers especially for SMPIT Nurul Islam Tengaran implement this technique in their speaking class and share the idea in a subject matter of teacher’s forum (MGMP). For the policy maker, this technique can be shared or be used as a material in workshop or training. In addition, it is suggested that other researchers carry out similar study on similar problems in the different setting.

Study ini adalah study action research yang mengimplementasikan language games untuk meningkatkan kemampuan speaking siswa. Tujuan dari research ini adalah: (1) untuk mengetahui apakah dan sejauh manakah language games dapat meningkatkan kemampuan speaking siswa, dan (2) untuk memberi gambaran bagaimana situasi kelas ketika language games digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran speaking.
Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada tahun pelajaran 2009/2010 pada siswa kelas 7 SMPIT Nurul Islam Tengaran. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus: siklus pertama terdiri dari empat pertemuan dan demikian juga pada siklus kedua. Prosedur penelitian terdiri dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan questionnaire, interview, classroom observation, tes, dan diary. Tes dilakukan dalam bentuk pre-test dan post test. Data qualitative dianalisa menggunakan Constant Comparative Method dan data quantitative dianalisa menggunakan descriptive statistik.
Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) language games dapat meningkatkan kemampuan speaking siswa dalam hal peningkatan nilai siswa pada aspek (a) fluency, (b) grammar,(c) vocabulary, (d) content, dan (e) pronunciation. (2) language games dapat meningkatkan situasi kelas, dalam hal siswa (a) menjadi aktif selama pelajaran speaking terutama ketika menjawab pertanyaan guru, (b) menjadi lebih interes terhadap pembelajaran speaking, (c) menjadi lebih berani untuk berbicara selama pembelajaran speaking, (d) menjadi lebig aktif dalam aktivitas individu maupun kelompok menjadikan siswa tidak mengantuk selama pelajaran speaking, dan (e) proses pembelajaran speaking lebig menarik.
Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, disarankan bahwa guru khususnya guru SMPIT Nurul Islam Tengaran untuk menggunakan teknik ini pada pembelajaran speaking mereka dan berbagi pengalaman dalam penggunaan teknik ini di forum MGMP. Bagi pemegang kebijakan teknih ini dapat ditularka atau digunakan sebagai bahan workshop atau training. Selanjutnya, disarankan juga bagi para peneliti lain untuk melaksanakan penelitian pada subjek yang sama dan pada permasalahan yang sama namun pada institusi yang berbeda.
