Penelitian ini didasarkan atas kondisi pembelajaran IPS SMP di Kota Surakarta yang masih jauh dari harapan, masih terfokus pada aspek kognitif dan kurang menyentuh aspek afektif dan psikomotorik. Bahkan lebih dari itu dituntut untuk dapat mengimplementasikan nilai-nilai karakter dalam pembelajaran. Untuk itulah dikembangkan model pembelajaran COLESTVIA melalui penggambungan tipe STAD, Tournament dan VIA sebagai upaya internalisasi nilai-nilai karakter dalam pembelajaran IPS. Perkembangan nilai-nilai karakter erat kaitannya dengan perkembangan kognitif dan hasil interaksi sosial, karena itu peneliti meyakini bahwa dengan pembelajaran IPS yang mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai karakter dapat memperkuat karakter dan jati diri siswa SMP Kota Surakarta.
Pengembangan Model COLESTVIA dilakukan melalui penelitian pengembangan dengan tiga tahapan pokok, yaitu studi pendahuluan, pengembangan dan uji model. Pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik observasi, wawancara, kuesioner dan dokumentasi. Analisis data pada studi pendahuluan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, sedangkan uji model melalui eksperimen dengan pendekatan kuantitatif untuk menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan penelitian, yakni : (1) bagaimanakah pelaksanaan pembelajaran IPS SMP Kelas VIII di Kota Surakarta, (2) Bagaimanakah pengembangan model COLESTVIA yang dapat mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai karakter, dan (3) bagaimanakah efektifitas pengembangan model COLESTVIA sebagai upaya internalisasi nilai-nilai karakter dalam pembelajaran IPS SMP Kelas VIII. Dengan menggunakan uji-t untuk mengetahui perbedaan model pembelajaran COLESTVIA dengan model pembelajaran Ceramah Bervariasi.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan setelah dilakukan uji coba di SMP 19 melalui PTK; uji luas di SMP 2 dan SMP Swasta A (eksperimen), SMP 3 dan SMP Swasta B (kontrol), dan uji efektifitas di SMP 19, SMP 24 dan SMP Swasta C (eksperimen) dan SMP 10, SMP 25 dan SMP Swasta D (kontrol), terbukti pembelajaran COLESTVIA mampu meningkatkan kompetensi dan nilai-nilai karakter siswa SMP di berbagai kelompok sekolah. Kesimpulan penelitian bahwa model pembelajaran COLESTVIA yang dikembangkan memenuhi prinsip-prinsip model pembelajaran dan terbukti secara signifikan dapat meningkatkan kompetensi dan nilai-nilai karakter siswa SMP Kota Surakata dibandingkan dengan pembelajaran model Ceramah Bervariasi.

This research is based on a condition of Social Studies learning in Junior High schools in Surakarta that is still far from hope, still focused on the cognitive aspect and lack in touch of affective and psychomotoric aspects. Even more than that – claimed to be able to implement character values in learning. Therefore, it is developed a learning COLESTVIA Model through combining STAD type, Tournament and VIA as an effort in internalization character values in learning Social Studies. The development of character values are concerned with cognitive development and the result of social interaction, therefore the researcher ensures that by having social studies learning that integrites the character values – can strengthen the character and personality for the Junior High school students in Surakarta.
The Development COLESTVIA Model is done through development research by three main steps, namely Introduction Study, Development and Model Trial. The collection data uses Observational Technique, Interview, Questionaire and Doccumentation. The Data Analysis on the Introduction Study uses qualitative, while the Model Trial through experiment by using quantitative Approach to answer the research questions, namely : (1) How is the performance of the Social Studies learning of the grade VIII Junior High School students in Surakarta, (2) How is the development of COLESTVIA Model that can integrite the character values, and (3) How is the effectiveness of The Development COLESTVIA Model as an attempt of the internalization of the character values in Social Studies learning of grade VIII Junior High school. By using the t-trial to know the difference between the model of COLESTVIA learning and the model of Various Speech Learning.
The result of the research shows after performing the try out in SMP 19 through Classroom Action Research (CAR); the wide trial in SMP 2 and private Junior High School A, (experiment), SMP 3 and private Junior High School B (control), and the effectivity trial in SMP 19, SMP 24 and private Junior High School C (experiment) and SMP 10, SMP 25 and private Junior High School D (contol), proven the COLESTVIA learning is able to improve the competency and the SMP students’ character values in various groups of school. The conclusion of the research is that the model of COLESTVIA learning that is developed fulfil the principles of the model learning and proven significantly be able to increase the competency and the Junior High School students’ character values in Surakarta compared with Learning Model of Various Speech.
